All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. — 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
The first time I played tackle football, I was ecstatic. I carried my shoulder pads and helmet everywhere like they were trophies. I was learning how to tackle and would even ask my mom to stand in front of the couch so I could practice my form (still mind-blown that she agreed to that—haha).
That obsession reminds me of the way I felt when I first connected to the life-changing power of Jesus. But instead of tackling people to tell them about Him, I was insatiable for His Word. I couldn’t get enough. I’d race home from school, sit at the desk in my room, and read—just read. That desk became holy ground. It was there I encountered the Lord in ways that would shape the rest of my life.
For the last year and a half, Jenae and I have prayed for that same hunger to be revived at TC3. That we’d long for His Word again. That we’d hide it in our hearts so we wouldn’t sin against Him. That His Word would be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
There are so many ways to consume Christian content today—and they’re not bad. Podcasts, YouTube sermons, devotional books—those can all be good things. But hear me clearly: they are supplements.
They’re the appetizers or the dessert—not the main course. If we treat them as the meal, we will be spiritually malnourished. Our emotional and spiritual maturity will plateau.
There is no substitute for being in the Word of God.
Let’s bring back Scripture memorization. This is how we hide God’s Word in our hearts:
