They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
— Acts 2:42–47
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
— Hebrews 10:23–25
Jenae and I were out to dinner with a couple one night. The wife loves Jesus, and her husband is pretty apprehensive when it comes to faith. He asked us, “If you had to explain to someone what you do, without using any type of faith terminology, how would you do it?”
It was such a brilliant question that almost stumped me (I don’t get stumped often—haha). I took a bite of pizza, drank some of Jenae’s Dr. Pepper, and responded, with a mouth half full of food, “Character development. What we do is character development. We help people develop the character of Christ Jesus.” Here’s the inside scoop on that answer—we do not do it. The Holy Spirit does.
This faith walk—whether we call it sanctification, spiritual formation, or transformation—is really about one thing: becoming more like Jesus. And that doesn’t happen alone.
You can sharpen your skills in isolation—but not your soul.
Wisdom and maturity are grown in community.
This week’s practice is simple:
Find people who will walk with you, challenge you, encourage you, and point you toward Jesus.
